Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy Sophia Voice & Mocap — Anna Demetriou
Anna Demetriou returns as Sophia and, for the first time, performs the motion capture too. What the official devblog says about the younger Sophia.
Updated · Official
Anna Demetriou plays Sophia again in Resonance, the same actor who voiced her in A Plague Tale: Requiem. The difference this time is that she performed the motion capture as well as the voice — which, per Asobo’s own account, is the first time the studio has had one performer do both for a single character.
Everything below is drawn from DEVBLOG #2, the interview Focus Entertainment and Asobo published to the official Steam news hub. It is first-party material, not a fan reconstruction, but it is an actor talking about performance rather than a spec sheet — treat it as characterisation, not mechanics.
Why the performance had to change
Resonance sits 15 years before Requiem, and Demetriou is blunt about what that gap does to the character. The Sophia you meet here is “bloodthirsty, violent and hot headed,” and stubborn with it. She has not yet been worn down by the sight of death, and she is not the one in the room trying to keep the peace.
Her framing for the shift: keep the swagger, the confidence and the groundedness that Requiem players know, then add a “screw it” mentality. Sophia in Resonance has not yet understood consequences.
About halfway through shooting she was given a specific note from the direction team — to bring some “Vi from Arcane” energy into the younger scenes. That is an unusually concrete reference point for the character, and a useful one: it tells you the register the studio aimed for.
The hardest scenes to play
The challenge Demetriou singles out is a recklessness layer where Sophia’s survival instincts take over and she is “overcome with rage / out of control.” She describes that as new for the character, and as the biggest single difficulty in the role.
Read alongside DEVBLOG #1, which describes Sophia as someone who “refuses to show vulnerability” and would “rather take the hit, keep moving, stay standing, even when she should stop,” a consistent picture emerges: Resonance is built around a protagonist who loses control, not one who manages it.
What this quietly tells you about Requiem
The most interesting thing in the interview is retroactive. Demetriou says that when she started on Requiem she found it confusing that this “independent pirate-like woman was imploring Amicia to stop being violent and never kill anyone” — Sophia read like someone who would happily join in.
Her answer now: Sophia was trying to be a parental figure, and on top of that, violence leads somewhere much darker for her, and is triggering. She stops short of explaining why, and points players at Resonance to find out. If you have finished Requiem, that is a fairly loud signal about where this story lands.
Voice and mocap in one performance
Sophia’s motion capture in Requiem was done by Giorgia Sinicorni, and Demetriou credits her directly — she felt Sinicorni had “physically embodied what I had in mind to do with my voice.” For Resonance the two halves were combined: Demetriou travelled to Bordeaux to perform voice and body at the same time, on set, reacting to the rest of the cast in real time.
That matters for a practical reason. Simultaneous voice and mocap is what produces matched breath, timing and eyeline in cutscenes, and Demetriou explicitly credits it for the realism and the chemistry between characters in the finished scenes. If the cutscene acting in Resonance reads better than Requiem’s, this is the production reason.
Confirmed vs not confirmed
- Confirmed: Anna Demetriou performs both voice and motion capture for Sophia; mocap was recorded at Asobo in Bordeaux; Giorgia Sinicorni performed Sophia’s mocap in Requiem.
- Not confirmed: the rest of the voice cast, whether the Minoan-era hero shares a performer, and which scenes the “out of control” material belongs to. Non-English VO was still being recorded as of DEVBLOG #3.
