Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy Minotaur Myth — Minos, Theseus & Ariadne
The Greek myth Resonance is built on, told straight, plus what Asobo's official devblog says about where their version begins and what it changes.
Updated · Official
Resonance does not retell the Minotaur myth. It starts after it. That is the single most useful thing to know going in, and it comes straight from Asobo’s own words in DEVBLOG #3, “Into The Myth” — a post the studio itself flags as containing minor spoilers.
The myth, in the order it happens
Asobo’s own summary runs like this, and it is worth having straight before you play:
- Minos, king of Crete, breaks a promise to Poseidon.
- The sea god’s revenge lands on Minos’s queen, Pasiphaë, who is cursed to give birth to the Minotaur — half man, half bull.
- To hide the child, Minos commissions the master architect Daedalus to build a labyrinth no one can escape.
- Minos then demands a toll from Athens: fourteen youths every year, sent in to feed a beast that has grown savage.
- Theseus, son of the Athenian king, volunteers.
- Ariadne, Minos’s clever daughter, gives him a thread. He goes deep, kills the Minotaur, and follows the thread back out.
- Then vanity takes over. He abandons Ariadne, and she curses him to a life of solitude and misfortune.
Where the game begins
Asobo’s line is precise enough to quote: “Resonance begins the moment the thread vanishes, and nothing guarantees the way back…”
So the labyrinth is not a puzzle box with a solution already written into legend. The lifeline is gone before your part of the story starts. That reframes the pursuit hook from the store page — the presence that follows Sophia and seems to know her every move — as something you are inside of without an exit, rather than something you can out-plan.
Theseus is the second hero
The Steam description talks about “the entwined destinies of two heroes linked by fate” without naming the second one. The devblog does: Sophia follows Theseus’s path on her journey across the island, and the studio calls him the character in whom their central themes are “especially present.”
The pairing is deliberately built as a mirror:
- Sophia was born into struggle and violence, and is searching for something better than that.
- Theseus is a well-off figure who turns to violence to get what he wants.
Asobo’s own summary: both have “the same — forgive the pun — bull-headed resolve and desire to control their own destiny.” The recurring motifs they name are savagery, and taming what will not be tamed.
What the myth is doing thematically
The Plague Tale series has always run on loss of innocence, illness and devotion. Asobo describe Resonance as continuing those and adding its own: at its core they call it a game about family, loyalty and betrayal, and “a story about dualities.”
The stated reason for reaching for this particular myth is that it gave them a way to explore their characters’ vulnerabilities and the loss of control they are forced into. Read that next to what Sophia’s performer says about playing her “overcome with rage / out of control” in our voice-actor page, and the two halves line up.
Do you need to know the myth to follow it?
No. Asobo are explicit that Resonance is a self-contained experience for newcomers, with “plenty of surprises for the fans of the series.” Knowing the legend is not a prerequisite — but knowing that Theseus was cursed for betraying the woman who saved him is the kind of detail that changes how a scene reads.
Confirmed vs not confirmed
- Confirmed: the myth is the game’s structural setting; Theseus’s path is the one Sophia follows; the game opens after Ariadne’s thread is gone; themes are family, loyalty and betrayal.
- Not confirmed: whether Ariadne, Minos, Pasiphaë or Daedalus appear as characters rather than as history, and how the Minoan-era sections are structured. Daedalus is only confirmed as the figure who wove light into the island.
